My students need to go watch Selma so that they can see part of their history displayed and analyze how it was displayed versus other forms of media they have seen.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students do not have much exposure to parts of their history. This will be a great way for them to get exposure to this.
I teach on the southwest side of Chicago.
We are a half African American and half Hispanic school. My school is an IB school, so exposing students to international mindedness and educating them about their cultures and other cultures is very important to us. This movie will allow us to expose our Hispanic students to the past of African Americans and a chance for our African American students to learn about the struggle their people have went through, so that they could have some of the rights they do today.
My Project
Students will be able to analyze different forms of media and how they display the same ideas. Students will do readings on Selma and other Civil Rights activities in various forms of media to compare how the African American struggle was portrayed. We will also compare and contrast this to there cultures struggle to receive rights.
This project will make a difference because it will allow us to start a conversation with the students about the past and how it affects how we live today.
It will also allow us to open up barriers in our own school by allowing the different demographics of students to see that their people all struggled to receive their rights and that they are not alone/in competition with each other.
