Selma Screening

My Students

My middle school scholars have been studying various figures who played pivotal roles in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Our scholars have written poems, created projects, directed skits and given performances to tell the story of civil rights leaders.

The scholars at my school are from the far south side of Chicago.

Most of our scholars have attended Schmid since they were very little. Our school is located in a tight-knit community surrounded by industrial areas and expressways. While the community is safe, it's location among factories and busy travel routes make it difficult for scholars to explore the community on their own.

My Project

By funding a trip to see Selma at the local movie theater, our scholars will get a chance to see what life was like for Martin Luther King, Jr. and watch the stories and struggles they have studied in class come to life on the big screen. Seeing this film will reignite conversations on the topic.

By seeing this film, our scholars will have a chance to gain a better understanding of the dedication and drive it took Dr. King and his supporters to forge change in their community and across the country.
