My students need to see Selma in order to visually experience and contextualize the "human" cost of fighting for equality and freedom.

My Students
Our class is driven by student-generated questions and interest, and we work diligently on literacy strategies to improve reading and writing through a social justice framework. Visualizing and connecting are key skills in helping students develop agency through literacy.
Our students are energetic, open, and eager for knowledge, wisdom and understanding.
They are talented in many ways, and often utilize alternative ways to demonstrate learning.
They are late school scholars who have been unsuccessful in "traditional" school environments. They are predominantly African American and from "low-income" situations.
My Project
Students will be assessed on all learning opportunities, both content and skill related. We are studying African American history and culture, and students will demonstrate their growth in these areas based on engaging with the content of the movie, Selma. They will also compare and contrast the movie with textual and other video sources and analyze and evaluate the information.
Our students always benefit from new experiences and opportunities to learn outside of the school building, and they are very good at engaging with visual learning.
They understand other materials much better when they have visual and auditory reinforcement and connections to attach to their preexisting schema in many areas, especially in the areas of African American history and culture, and in social justice.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
