Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

After greeting students at the door, they settle in at their seats. Everyone must THINK about the day by looking at the whiteboard, while getting out pencils and journals. Their first task is a Journal Quick Write. Starting the day quietly and focused is key for my intervention students.

The location of our school places the greatest concentration of economically challenged middle school students in town at our site.

It is not uncommon for them to seldom receive any gifts for Christmas. However, that does not detract from the energy and effort of our staff to move students forward toward a future that may include college or technical school. Our school offers before and after school programs that support their need for homework help, along with many sports. Our campus has many students who speak more than one language. The students that I serve in Reading Intervention are frequently second language learners, along with many Resource Students who have learning disabilities. Some students deal with both issues. Most of my sixth graders have experienced lots of failure academically, so boosting their confidence is a priority. Having attractive and dynamic classroom equipment positively contributes to the view they have of themselves.

My Project

Learning to type correctly and efficiently is an essential skill for all 21st century citizens. These special keyboards I am requesting will be a" WOW" surprise for my students. Just looking at them will be an encouragement that this is a skill they can acquire. The fact that they are so colorful and carefully planned out, will push them to practice successfully. The keyboards will serve as 'training wheels', as they learn to type with more than two fingers! They will use a free on-line typing program. I will demonstrate on the overhead projector, and they will take turns at the computers during our project time. The goal is for students to type the final essay for each Reading/Writing Workshop. Being able to type their work also instills a sense of pride in the finished project.

Reading Intervention involves daily computer work.

This part of the program is very specific for each student. By having these Teach-to-Type keyboards, students will be more engaged in the typing process. These students need as much sensory stimulation as possible in order to increase learning. Color coded keys will help them in typing and spelling! For my students to end their school year saying, "I can type 30 words per minute", will be an award winning achievement.
