Second grade has changed a lot over the years. The students are expected to achieve more than ever before. How can they do this without being provided the materials to do it?
My students are in a high poverty public school that is about 70% low income.
This is something that already puts some of them at a disadvantage. They are not all able to get extra materials at home to continue learning what has been introduced at school. For this reason, I want to be able to expose them to as many learning opportunities as possible! It is in my classroom where they get to take risks and open their minds to new learning experiences! I need your help to give them all of these experiences!
My Project
Over the years I have noticed that more and more students struggle with social, emotional, and behavioral skills. These skills are crucial for students to be successful in school and in life. Because many children are not learning these skills at home, it has become important for teachers to include these lessons and skills in the classroom.
"Social and emotional learning can improve positive attitudes towards self and others and increase students' academic performance by 11 percentile points" (Durak et all, 2011).
Through the use of books and activities, I can help my students to learn these skills for a successful future.
