Self Reflection for College Direction

My students need journals for not only creative expression but to explore the depths of their character and experience, to break free from core-content related curriculum and delve into the social-emotional learning experience.

My Students

I currently teach a cohort of students through "OneGoal", a college preparation program that follows students for three years. We follow the steps that it takes to prepare for college, apply for college, and persist through college with intensive supports and lots of deliberate planning. Our school is situated on the South Side of Chicago, nearby a gentrifying area with new neighbors that are quick to write off our school as "not good enough"- however, inside our building we know about the momentum of ambition coupled with rigorous academics, and how our students are striving and achieving greatness in a variety of facets.

My students are scholars, athletes, activists, leaders, friends and ultimately they are teenagers who are becoming champions of their individual selves.

As we progress through the college application process, we realize that careful introspection is very important as a means for self-growth, but also in helping to determine future goals.

My Project

I have selected a variety of exploratory journals for my students- I want them to have a space to work through their thoughts and identity. I personally, find it very inspiring to not only have reflective prompts, but to also have space to doodle, list, and create in my journal. For example, "Wreck this Journal" and "Start Where You Are" are journals that allow the author to interact with each page- by pairing quotes and reflective activities. These prompts will spark motivation in my students beyond simply writing about a day's experience.

Our class will use the requested materials each week on Monday for our "Motivational and Meditation Monday" lessons.

They will reflect on themselves and delve into college preparation by reviewing books that give pre-college students insights into the college consideration process. We will work with book partners and the pairs will each read a book and create a mini guide of must-know information from that particular book. We want our class to have the best advantage and preparation for college that is possible! Books like "Beckham's Guide to Scholarships for Black and Minority Students: More Than 1000 Sources of Private Aid" will connect my students with additional resources to help make college persistence a reality. "The Next Level: Six Perspectives on the College Choice Process of Student Athletes" will guide several of my students who are well on their way to become Division 1 athletes. I want my students to feel not only successful but secure in their college decisions. All resources listed below tap into needs that break beyond the general curriculum and challenge my students to be very intentional about the next step of their life and education.
