My students need a book binding machine to enhance the publishing element of their writing process.

My Students
The fifth-grade students at our school are constantly working toward being stewards of our watershed, empowered decision makers, historians and conscientious community members. We are located in south-central Montana, just north of Yellowstone National Park. We are an active, outdoorsy and environmentally aware class. Being engaged with our "backyard" keeps us connected to our watershed.
Our daily goal is to explore learning through personal experience and modeling.
The fifth graders of Livingston value the knowledge they acquire in this year of study, and some students reflect upon graduation that it was their favorite.
My Project
We want a bookbinding machine so we can self-publish our writing. Throughout the year we write poems, stories and create works of art that would be enhanced if we had a binding machine to formalize our works into a more professional bound format. This binding machine is great because you can add pages to the book throughout the year as they are created.
We write poems inspired by our units of study.
For example, we write Cowboy Poetry during the Westward Expansion unit, we write Haiku Poetry when we study macro-invertebrates and we write about grasshoppers when we study the Great Depression. Usually, I collect all the poems and safeguard them in the cupboard until the end of the year. On "binding day" this year students will make three books. One book is a collection of their poetry, the second is a collection of portraits they have illustrated throughout history and the third is a collection of short stories written by each class member.
I need teacher resource books to become a better creative writing instructor. We need poem books to be able to read examples from notable poets throughout history. With teacher resource books and poetry books, I hope to establish a poetry center that students can visit frequently rather than just when I have a creative writing or poem writing lesson planned. I just might have the next great poet in my class!
