Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I want to create a classroom that is inviting to all and that creates a safe environment to make mistakes, learn from the mistakes and develop into an educational advocate for themselves. This year we will focus on our unique identities as a lesson arc. Our main focus will be to publish our own cookbook. Each student will choose a recipe that is representative of their culture, write an 1 -3 paragraph persuasive essay about why someone should cook this meal and a 1 -2 paragraph essay about the history and cultural significance of the food's origins. Then, students will modify the recipe using ratios and tables for different serving sizes. Each student will have the opportunity to cook their recipe in class and get to take home a finished cookbook.
The Cricut will help us publish our book for students to take home.
They will need to come up with their own graphics and sign templates for their chosen recipe. Students will have the opportunity to create their own shirt advertising their cookbook during presentations given to staff and families. Please help us in funding the book binding supplies needed.
I work at a school with 95%+ of the students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch; many are below the poverty line and 2 to 3 grade levels below in reading and math skills.
