This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When 5th Graders come to art, they spend the first ten minutes drawing in their sketchbooks. Developing their drawing and imagining skills is enhanced by practice, practice and more practice. This is something 5th Graders love. These skills help them draw their own self-portraits.
Many of my 5th Graders have been here since kindergarten when they immigrated to our country.
Their families are very close knit and the parents have high hopes for their children's success. Art is no different. Many parents are artistic and share that love of art with their children. They come from very impoverished situations, but often my students will recognize a famous painting because they have a print of it hanging up at home. One of our favorite festivals is our Spring Arts Festival where families can become engaged in several diverse activities. Art teachers are encouraged by the student's imaginations and creativity. It is surprising to see them come up with innovative solutions to problem solving on their own. That is what art is all about, the freedom to discover, explore and experiment.
My Project
My students need twenty-two new self-portrait mirrors. At least twice a year, students draw their own self-portraits. Once at the beginning of the year. And again at the end of the year. These self-portraits show the students how their drawing and observation skills progress over time. They are often surprised to see how they've changed.
My students love drawing and especially when it is themselves.
We need more mirrors in the class, so everyone can share and see themselves. Please consider donating to our project. We are Title One and your generous help is appreciated by all of us!
