Self-portraits in a Non-verbal World

Help me give my students the materials to create self-portraits to display in the school's culminating project event!

My Project

My art students are in middle school and high school. The class ratios are 6:1+1, 12:1+1, 12:1+4, meaning the student-to-staff ratio. Many of the students are non-verbal and rely on communication devices to express themselves.

That is why art and photography are so important for them to express themselves and communicate who they are to the world.

These students with disabilities range from Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, and Multiple Disabilities. In this project, students will create self-portraits using photography, drawing, and painting. They will create poems to accompany their images following the teachings of Wendy Ewald and her book, "The Best Part of Me."

In order to do this project, the school is short some minor supplies such as ink for the photo printer and glue sticks for the hot glue gun. By having these supplies, we will be able to create a display in the school's culminating project and participate and engage the school community on a new level!
