This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are fifth-graders in an urban school. They represent diverse nationalities, home languages, family structures, interests, and learning styles.
My students are determined to overcome any obstacles they face in life.
The school neighborhood is in an area of high poverty, and more than 80% of the students in the community entered school with a primary language background other than English. However, my students will not let their circumstances label them as disadvantaged learners. They continue to make the best of the opportunities they are presented. As a result, they will finish their elementary school career with determination and resilience!
My Project
My students have spent nearly half of their educational career navigating a global pandemic. They continue to weather these emotionally and academically challenging times like true champions. These materials will give them tools they can use to self-monitor, reflect on, and manage their emotions while also engaging and developing their pre-frontal cortex with critical thinking activities.
Like my students the main character of the novel "In the Red" faces uncertainty and anxieties in his life.
Using this novel as a shared reading experience will allow me to support my students with tools and strategies to recognize and manage their own fears and discomfort. The stress balls, journals, post cards, pens and pencils, and design kit materials will provide numerous outlets for my students to put their energies to a physically productive, positive use.
