Self Discovery and Creativity With Self Portraits in Art Class

Help me give my students drawing supplies like tagboard, paper, sharpeners, and paint to let their creativity flow in art class while identifying emotions and building self awareness with self portraits.

My Project

Our wonderful school is home to 500 amazing creative students. We have general education K-6 classrooms as well as a special education program in our school with students who mainstream to special areas.

Art is such an important time for all students to enter a safe and joyful space where they can be entirely themselves, and feel comfortable creating with a variety of art materials.

Our school was impacted by Covid-19 by not being able to host our annual fundraising art show for two years, which means we have been unable to purchase a lot of the materials we need. Unfortunately, our pencil sharpener quit working last year, so we need a replacement so students can sharpen their pencils in order to do their sketches for projects. The tagboard and paints will then be used for students to paint self portraits while learning about art styles and artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, and Andy Warhol.

The goal and objective are for self portraits to empower students to identify and share their emotions both verbally and visually, a critical aspect of building self-awareness and social emotional learning. They will draw, and then paint using the supplies we requested. They will then use the popsicle sticks and pom poms to create and decorate frames for their self portraits which we will display throughout the halls. Students always enjoy playing and building with Magna-Tiles after they are finished with their art projects and have some time left over in the class period and still want to be creative and productive with their time. Thank you so much for considering our art room for this generous donation to support our students in their creativity, emotional development, and self discovery with self portraits in art!
