Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There are 24 creative and hardworking first grade students in our classroom who inspire me every day. We are the only first grade class in a high needs, low-income school on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. Despite so many hardships outside of our four walls, my students are eager to come to school to learn and do their best. Our classroom is the type of place where they feel not only safe, but brave and take risks and ask questions while leading their own learning.
My students each learn in their own way, and that often means dipping into my own pockets to support them, as their teacher, to make sure everyone succeeds.
Many of my students come from families that struggle to provide their children with supplies for school. I aim to inspire our earliest learners on a path of academic excellence by immersing them in a supportive, engaging and thought-provoking environment.
My Project
Help me create calm moments for my students through a combination of art activities, toys and sensory play. These materials will help set the tone in the classroom and will be predominately used in our "Cool Down Corner" and as student created artwork around our room.
Social emotional learning is just as, if not more, important to academic learning.
First grade is such a crucial year of growth and half of my class hasn't been in a school building yet. I want to help students build their self-care routines and mindfulness. These practices are crucial to explore at such a young age as it will shape your experiences forever.
This project will help to continue to create an environment that is like home for my students. When they feel comfortable and like they have a hand in how our classroom looks, then the classroom transforms from a safe space into a brave one.
