Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work primarily with a group of mostly Black and Brown middle school students. They come from a wide mix of cultural backgrounds and experiences, and from a wide variety of language and academic ability. As a counselor, my main focus is to support my students in managing their emotions and learn the tools they need to become successful adults. I work with them on finding ways to remain focused during class, make and maintain friendships, or manage their bigger emotions in productive ways. Academic success is hard to manage when your emotions are all over the place or when you've been recently triggered.
These tools are a great way to help students de-escalate and find a way to work through their more volatile emotions.
They can also be a useful way to help them figure out what they need in the moment, as tools like fidget toys can give their bodies something to focus on as they think and process.
Middle school is the time when young people are finding themselves and learning about who they want to be. With these tools, I hope to better support them during this process.
