Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year I completed a health screening with our students grades 6-12. As predicted, the number with students experiencing depression and anxiety is alarming and needs attention. Students are expected to come to school and learn regardless of what their mental health looks like and it is proven that things just do not work that way. As one social worker working with 400 students in grades 6-12, it’s hard to do individual therapy with each of them while at the same time taking care of so many other things in my position. I am hoping to run at least 4 different groups this year to address these areas of need with multiple students at once and help them learn and use different coping skills.
Groups are a good way for students who are experiencing similar issues, to come together and learn all while healing and moving forward.
However, in order for groups to be engaging for teens is important to have the adequate materials. Groups can meet many times and I want to make sure every session is productive and helpful for them. I will make sure they learn a coping skill each week and have something to take with them that is positive and will help them navigate these feelings as they continue to arise.
I am requesting a few materials to give students while in group sessions, things like gratitude journals, pencils, stress balls, fidgets, and bracelets with affirmations. These are things the students will keep and learn how to use to be effective coping mechanisms. I also am requesting a plastic storage box to keep them in. I am hoping to get these groups going soon and start helping our students as much as possible and your contribution will make this happen. Thank you so much!
