SEL Library and Yoga Mats for Behavioral Special Education Classroom

Help me give my students tools to manage their emotions. These books will facilitate lessons in SEL and help my behavioral special education students learn to make safe choices so they can return to their general education classroom.

My Project

I teach K-3 behavioral special education. My students struggle with regulating their emotions and bodies. Unfortunately most of my students make choices that are too unsafe for them to be in a general education classroom setting. The purpose of my classroom is to teach students how to understand their emotions, process their feelings, and make safe choices.

My students learn breathing exercises and meditation to help them feel, process, and let go of big feelings.

As of right now they sit or lay on the floor during these exercises. Having these yoga mats will give the students a clean and comfortable place to practice these exercises.

Our social emotional learning lessons are often centered around books and art. Using SEL books such as these, help my students to connect and understand that days lesson on a personal level. They can see themselves in the stories. They see that it is possible, with the right tools, to be safe and to express emotions in a healthy way. These books are used to demonstrate how to identify feelings, communicate with others in a healthy way, and safely manage their emotions.

I use art in my classroom as a way for my students to express themselves, and practice their learned tools of regulation in a low risk setting. Art can be challenging and bring up frustrations. When those frustrations arise we go back to what we have learned our books and practice dealing with those frustrating or big feelings in a healthy way.

Any support you can give my students would be so appreciated. My students are great kids with good hearts, they just have yet to learn how to handle those big feelings we all have. Your help and support will directly help me help them. Thank you!
