Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students in my classes have mild to moderate disabilities, including learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and ADHD.
Because of their disabilities, many of my students struggle with their social-emotional skills.
This project is intended to help them increase those skills. It includes games, curriculum, journal prompts, and wall art. We will work on understanding empathy, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
Research shows that SEL not only improves achievement by an average of 11 percentile points, but it also increases prosocial behaviors (such as kindness, sharing, and empathy), improves student attitudes toward school, and reduces depression and stress among students (Durlak et al., 2011).
