This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
First things first: my students LOVE board games. In our room, we like to play board games to build classroom community and to work on SEL skills that we talk about in SEL lessons. Whenever students in my room earn free time, I always encourage them to stay off screens, they get enough of those already, and play games with each other. When students play games, they are having fun, but they are also working on communication and problem-solving skills.
My students are always eager and excited to try out new games I bring into class.
When students want to play a specific game, we have a rule: anyone who wants to play, gets to play. This rule helps build our classroom community because students who do not usually interact with each other begin to form relationships. Board games are great in this way, especially for our diverse learner students who sometimes struggle to make connections with their gen ed peers.
