SEL Counseling Group Materials

My Students

My students are bright and curious. Many of my students have difficult backgrounds but come to school every day to learn. School is important to them because they know that education is key in improving their outcomes and their lives. We are an elementary school in the city of Detroit. The students are not only interested in improving themselves, but improving and revitalizing their city at the same time. My students have a variety of talents and interests and our goal as a school is to increase their access to different programs and activities that they would not get to experience outside of the school setting.

My Project

As educators, we have seen the negative impact of isolation on our students' academics. As a school counselor, I have seen the negative impacts on our students' mental health. SEL activities are more important than ever.

This project will give us an opportunity to practice our reading while also learning about emotions and valuable self-regulation and coping skills.

They will be used in a small group setting so students can practice these SEL skills together as we learn.

Student interactions will be paramount for both growth and for repairing the harm done by the isolation that has resulted from the pandemic. SEL skills are more important than ever.
