My Students
As a teacher in a high poverty district, my students come into the classroom with many challenges. Learning reading and writing skills has been especially difficult for my students. Their access to meaningful and challenging works of literature has been limited. This is especially for works of literature that contain heroes that represent them and their concerns.
My students deserve to read works of literature with characters who reflect their lives.
They deserve to read about characters who struggle and strive and overcome. They deserve to read stories about a future time where they are present, active, and thriving.
My Project
This year my class is focusing on reading longer texts (novels, novellas, etc.) and analyzing those texts to understand how writers build multiple themes into a work of literature. My students will use these texts to develop their reading stamina and ability to analyze and compare and contrast texts that share similar themes.
More importantly, this book will allow my students to read about a future world in which characters who share similar circumstances are valued and are seen as important.
It is frustrating to see my students struggle to engage with texts that are difficult to read and which they find uninteresting because the characters are so vastly different from themselves. These books will help my students to understand that their stories matter, too.
