Seeing Yourself in Literature: Great Books for Middle Schoolers

Help me give my students books that will encourage them to view the world from different perspectives, think critically about past and current events in our world's history, and connect with characters they can see themselves in.

My Students

I teach an energetic and spirited group of 6th-grade students. In our school community, teachers and staff value each student as a whole person. Their interests, backgrounds, struggles, and successes - both in school and in the community - are what make our school a more unique and special place. The students and staff value diversity of all people and strive to make our school an inclusive environment where all students are empowered and can develop their greatest potential. My students are thinkers, entrepreneurs, athletes, world travelers, artists, mathematicians, scientists, comedians, teachers, authors, doctors, musicians... They are our future, and I want to give them a great start to their journey of life-long learning.

My Project

The library in my classroom is slowly growing, with as many books as I can get for my students. I want our library to be a place within the classroom that students enjoy - where they feel safe to explore new topics, search for answers, or read for enjoyment. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.

They will also be able to choose books that interest them.

The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My incoming students have already shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
