This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach high school students in the heart of Washington Heights in New York City. I teach a range of students, from students with disabilities to English language learners to students living in unstable homes. Our school provides a warm and welcoming environment because we know that that is important, especially for our student population. Our students are resilient and look towards a bright future.
Many of my students, however, are reluctant to do independent reading.
They often say that our classroom library books are boring and wish we had more exciting books. I usually reply by saying that they just haven't found a book they like but that soon they will. When I have had access to books where they can identify with the character, they have said that the book is exciting and want to continue reading. I want my students to develop a love of reading, and I know they will with the right book. I want to provide all my students with a book to take home and read, then come back to school and discuss what they read.
