This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a special education teacher in a Title I priority school. This means that there is very little funding; yet, we have a high need for materials to support instruction. My students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. These challenges do not stop them from participating in class with a bright smile and an eagerness to learn something new.
I love how curious my students are about the world around them and how much they love school and learning!
My students are a diverse group of learners that bring a variety of cultures into the classroom. They all bring a unique personality and a strong desire for learning. In our class, we focus on a growth mindset, fostering positive relationships with our peers, and choosing kindness above everything else. This year brought upon some of the most difficult challenges, yet, my students showed perseverance and remarkable achievement through the school year. Their eagerness to learn is what keeps me motivated.
My Project
As a teacher, I am always seeking new ways to keep my students engaged and interested in the classroom. One way to do so is to incorporate lessons that cater to a variety of learning styles, including kinesthetic learners.
Kinesthetic learners thrive on information input from the things they touch, smell, taste, and otherwise experience with their bodies.
For this reason, hands-on learning activities are the quickest and most effective way of learning a new skill or grasping a new concept. Hands-on materials such as these math manipulatives and raised line writing paper will allow them to interact with the lessons in new ways so that they are more able to comprehend new concepts. Many of these materials are tactile in nature so that even my students with visual impairments will be able to use them to identify numbers, shapes, and quantities and, therefore, participate more fully in our lessons.
