Seeing the World through the Eyes of a First Grader!

Help me give my students a whole new view of the world by transforming our classroom into a virtual reality space where they can see how their learning connects to the real world through these Google Expedition Kits.

My Students

What makes my students special? That is a great question and probably answered in similar ways by most teachers. Here is how I would describe my students. They are unique individuals with different learning styles. They have a curiosity for learning and desire to help others. They work hard as a team and understand what unity in our classroom means. They know that each one of them contributes to our classroom community and our opinions are valued. My first grade students are curious about the world and eager to learn and compare our cultures and traditions to others with respectful conversations and views. I am always trying to find new ways to introduce them to what is out there and help them grow as global learners. When sparked with new information, they develop the desire to discover more. I love seeing them take ownership of their learning and making real world connections to the happenings in our classroom. They make teaching so much fun!

My Project

As a Global Teacher, I strive to help my students understand how their learning connects to others across our world. I want them to understand the importance of learning about other cultures and traditions. Building this perspective helps students develop empathy for others and truly sparks conversations that lead to collaborative learning.

Currently I use literature, real life events, Skype in the Classroom, videos, and global connections to help open my students to the big world around us.

We make connections across academic areas. I even have a Virtual Reality headset that all my students share. They love using Google Expeditions and other apps to connect their learning, but that takes time when you have 20 students and one device. This Google Expedition Kit will allow me to take up to five of my students on virtual reality field trips where their learning can be extended and more in depth conversations can be had through small group instruction which will lead to more collaborative projects within our classroom, help build connections with families through sharing our travels, and spark that curiosity in my students that have them looking for more information.

It is never too early to set goals and that is what I want to do with my first graders. I want them seeing what is out their in this world and how they can contribute and be apart of transforming it as they develop into global citizens. Won't you help me bring the world to them?
