Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every morning we compliment one person in our lives, describing how they are special. Our students' challenge is comprehension and writing. We modify their writing into drawing pictures depicting their understanding. "Being different is one of the most beautiful things on earth."

The students range from grades 6-8, and have a primary label as autism.

the classroom consists of 9 students and 2 Para-Professionals. Cognitive levels vary, as well as significant verbal and behavioral issues. It is critical that lesson are presented in a systematic manner, which provide them the ability to understand and have a predictable curriculum. Consistency and providing them with a highly structured, organized classroom with visual supports, is essential for them to attend, focus, and produce quality work. They are very concrete in their understanding of new material, so we correlate and tie generalization by relating lessons from life experiences. We are in and inner city district struggling like most from financial issues.

My Project

The materials requested will be used to create and modify the curriculum through visual supports, signs, additional pictures/documents, assessments, and documentation. All lessons require many more steps, since we need to (task analyze), meaning breaking every lesson down to the most simple step, then building upon that. A typical activity would be reading. We make use visual cards depicting the story to have students discuss. They then talk about their knowledge of the book. We then present vocabulary words that will be introduced, along with any personal connections they may have. As each part/chapter of the book, there are language strips for the student to fill in as we go along. Some will write their understanding of what we read, others will draw pictures from which we base assessments on. They will ultimately write and be assessed on their comprehension. They will learn recall, writing strategies, vocabulary, and group participation, all which require visual supports.

The donations requested will enable our students to learn step by step the strategies, vocabulary and comprehension skills through additional supports needed for them to be successful.

We need to provide them with the resources needed to develop the skills need to keep them on par with their typical counterparts, and allow them the same opportunities. They need to learn step by step, building to create a final product. The goal for our students is to promote a higher level of thinking.
