Help me give my students books like Barefoot Gen and March. These are texts that engage them literally and visually, and connect to what they are learning in class and in what's going on in the world.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When you meet my students, you understand that they are so much more than a label or a statistic. My kids belong to one of the richest communities of Chicago.
Our students statistically have always been low-income but are some of the best and brightest from the city.
This neighborhood, like my kids, is predominantly Mexican-American. They are hard-working students that usually balance school, family (caring for siblings), sports and after-school clubs and activities. They are highly motivated to be successful but can always use any help afforded to them.
My Project
As readers, we all have different likes and different needs at different times. Having engaging texts available to students is essential, though not always easy to provide based on school budgets. I find myself purchasing many books with my personal money so that my students can experience these texts.
We need texts that are visually engaging, allowing for students who may struggle with reading understand these important concepts - not just to pass reading but to understand what is going on in the world.
Having these would not only support my units, but also help foster a love of reading.
