Seeing The World: One Clip at a Time

My Students

When learning about animal habitats this past year the students had to crowd around my laptop to view videos. It would be so wonderful if I could project these learning videos onto a screen and give each student background knowledge that they need to be successful in school.

We teach a diverse group of learners at a small Title 1 elementary school in New Hampshire.

75% of our students receive free/reduced lunch and 10% are English Language Learners. Our students are excited to learn new concepts, but many lack sufficient background knowledge on most topics. I want my classroom to be a safe and engaging environment for these students that face significant struggles outside of school. I want to use the projector to provide clips that will support the acquisition of science vocabulary and inquiry.

My Project

The video streaming service includes dynamic vocabulary learning modules with supplementary clips to illustrate the terms. Because many of my students have different learning needs and background knowledge, the ability to project this is crucial. We have limited access to computers in our building, so the one computer in class model is the best way for us to embed technology in our curriculum. We have been fortunate to receive the video streaming grant and we want to maximize its potential learning impact on our students. In addition to animal habitats, we will also learn about weather and pushes and pulls. A professional goal of mine is to motivate all students with science inquiry and knowledge. One of our building goals is to increase STEM awareness and provide learning opportunities for all learners.

In a classroom of first graders, it can be challenge to keep them engaged and on task.

Using the projector and video clips will grab their attention and allow them to make connections to the science curriculum. Providing a visual representation of the concepts will further enhance learning. We will follow up the videos with different literacy strategies, writing and science journals to assess what they have learned. Teaching these 21st century skills is essential in today’s classroom.
