My Students
Our school is a neighborhood school in San Francisco that serves students in some of the most underfunded and under-resourced parts of the city. At a time when families are loosing their housing, fresh food is sparse and job security is unstable, our school is an essential part of the community. It is important that my classroom provide students with access to the most engaging books.
My books should invite my readers into a world of literacy everyday while simultaneously representing their cultures.
My students do not have opportunities to visit libraries or book stores regularly so it is essential that the books in my classroom open their worlds. It is also necessary that they see themselves in the available books.
My Project
Everyday my students walk into a classroom that contains books, materials and lesson plans that do not generally represent their culture. There is a lot of power in being able to see and hear oneself within texts and plans in the classroom. I have a diverse group of students and they need to have access to books that reflect their the beauty of their cultures.
I want my students to be able to see themselves in the books they read, the characters they analyze and the stories we share.
As a teacher it is important that I explicitly search for these texts so that my students have opportunities to connect with and learn from representations of their lives.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
