Help me give my students a History class experience that gives them a stronger understanding of how people from all cultures have overcome struggles for centuries and how we will continue to try and make our communities better.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students have roots in our building's namesake. My students come from as close as across the street to as far as New Jersey and the Bronx, with the overwhelming majority of families identifying as LatinX or Black.
My scholars have never had a dedicated History class before stepping into our building.
Our families come from traditionally underserved communities and step in to our building dedicated to becoming empowered.
My Project
This project will help me to compile a student library dedicated to the History department where students can see themselves in history and better understand the struggles of other communities as well.
They will have dedicated time to choose a book that interests them and report out to the class about what they have learned, why it's important, and how it's connected to their community.
These titles are specifically chosen to illuminate and address struggles that the communities my students come from have faced, continue to face, and will have to overcome as adults. By creating choice in the book selection and grounding the books in experiences they can relate to our students will be further empowered as they face the challenges within their communities.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
