My Students

My English Language Learners are typical middle school students, but they live a high need area of Harlem, New York City. Some require glasses and eye exams. My students' parents work; some of them have more than one job, so they cannot easily take time off to take their child to the ophthalmologist. I am a teacher who wears glasses, but I sometimes schedule my routine eye exams during spring recess or summer vacation because teaching keeps me that busy!

I base my lessons on literacy skills, which require students to read during every period and read independently for 30 minutes at home.

This pace is difficult for some of them to maintain high reading stamina due to vision problems. Sometimes students do not like to realize that not being able to focus their eyes is hindering their learning.

Having taught in high poverty inner urban schools for over 6 years, I notice that students are reluctant to self-advocate. Many of my students are from immigrant families whose cultures make asking their teachers for glasses unthinkable. But donated eye exams and glasses would be acceptable gifts of help.

My Project

A school visit by a qualified ophthalmologist/optometrist will make a world of difference in my students' learning. Most of the students at our middle school are excited to learn, but some are either lethargic or easily upset because their eyes cannot focus on the printed page or they can only squint at the SMART Board to read the lesson. They need glasses!

In a high poverty area our students' parents constantly work to make ends meet, so taking a child to get an eye exam is difficult to arrange.

By having the eye exam performed in school eliminates the need for parents to take off work time and the donations for eyewear will off-set the costs that parents would have to stretch a budget to buy new glasses.

Once our students clearly see the board and can focus on words in their book, they will believe they can achieve and have fewer excuses to avoid completing their homework.
