Seeds of Climate Change

Help me give my students books exploring climate change and diverse ecosystems, especially our local desert. Hands-on projects like seeded bookmarks and recycled paper will foster environmental awareness and a love for our planet.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I'm eager to cultivate a deeper understanding of our changing climate and the fascinating ecosystems of our world within my students. This project will provide a thoughtfully curated collection of books, ranging from foundational texts like "A Kids Book About Climate Change" to explorations of diverse habitats such as those in "A Day in the Life of the Desert," and innovative perspectives offered in "The Forest in the Sea: Seaweed Solutions to Planetary Problems." These resources will encourage inquiry and build a strong base of environmental literacy.

Our learning will extend beyond the pages through meaningful, hands-on activities that connect directly to conservation principles.

Students will have the opportunity to create seeded bookmarks using southwest wildflower seeds, learning about native flora and the vital role of pollinators. Furthermore, we will be utilizing a paper making kit to recycle paper from our school into new paper for their own recycled bookmarks. This practical experience, inspired by resources like "The Last Plastic Straw: A Plastic Problem and Finding Ways to Fix It," will illustrate the importance of waste reduction and resourcefulness in a tangible way.

It is my hope that these carefully selected books and engaging activities will foster a profound appreciation for the natural world and empower my students to become thoughtful and informed environmental citizens. By providing these resources, we can nurture a sense of responsibility and inspire a lasting commitment to the well-being of our planet, beginning right here in our desert community and extending to the wider world.
