My Project

Our students face systemic barriers that limit access to healthy food, green spaces, and culturally relevant learning opportunities. Through the Carolina Kids afterschool program, we are creating a student-led garden that centers racial justice and representation—a space where Black and Brown youth can see their histories, cultures, and voices reflected in the land and in their learning.

We are seeking supplies such as a weed barrier, storage shed, sprinklers, and gardening tools to build a sustainable garden that nurtures both plants and pride.

This garden will serve as a living classroom for students to engage in science, food justice, and community leadership rooted in their identity.

This garden will affirm our students’ cultural heritage and strengthen their sense of belonging by growing foods and plants connected to their communities. It provides a safe, empowering space for students to develop leadership skills, take ownership, and actively challenge inequities related to food access and environmental justice.

Through hands-on learning and reflection, students will cultivate a deeper understanding of how their identities intersect with science, health, and social justice.
