Seedfolks Books for Design for Change Unit

My Project

In addition to math, I also teach ESL III. This spring, we are beginning a unit called Design for Change. Students need to identify a problem and propose a solution. The purpose is for students to research and investigate social justice issues and present real-life, practical solutions to work towards a more equitable society. The supplemental reading material for this unit is Seedfolks, a book by Paul Fleischman.

Seedfolks is a collection of thirteen vignettes about a group of neighbors who, one by one, come together to create a positive change in their community.

It all starts when one little girl plants a lima bean in a vacant lot. This one seed ends up drawing attention from neighbors of all walks of life, and by the end of the book, the vacant lot is transformed into something beautiful. Seedfolks connects to our Design for Change unit because it shows the power in community and in people coming together to make a positive impact.

My students love to read, and I know having hard copies of the book will greatly help with engagement and understanding of the story. Since my students are newcomers, Seedfolks is the perfect book for them since it's broken up into short vignettes, making reading English more manageable and less intimidating. After reading this book, I hope students realize not only the power they hold in numbers, but that one simple act of goodness can spark a powerful change. My goal is for students to understand the power they hold, and then use their power to fight for solutions to the problems they identify.
