Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of my kindergarten/first grade students have physical disabilities with motor, speech/language, cognitive, and/or other health impairments. Most of my students are unable to complete paper/pencil tasks, projects, or other traditional forms of student work. I adapt all educational materials to include manipulatives, communication devices, specialized computer programs, etc.
All learning activities are highly individualized to accommodate the needs of each of my students. Not only are the concepts/skills to be mastered varied but also the process by which these goals are accomplished varies greatly between students. A sample of key activities include learning to self-feed with adapted utensils and adult assistance, stringing large beads on pipe cleaners, grasping and releasing objects upon command, attending to a picture or face, sorting colors using large manipulatives, matching letters using a laminated alphabet mat with Velcro letters, identifying numbers using a communication device, and typing one's name, address, and other identifying information on a computer using adapted software and keyboard.
The absence of student generated work samples, however, weakens my documentation of progress. My project uses digital photography to create picture portfolios of my students learning. Limited attention, involuntary motor movements, and/or delayed auditory/visual processing make picture taking difficult. Digital photography, however, provides the immediate feedback and re-take capabilities needed to accommodate my student’s disabilities and truly capture the moment. The pictures provide evidence and accountability to my assessments and serve as a basis and a guide as to "how" my young students with special needs learn.
The benefits of this project will be immense. Imagine how a child who has never been able to show his/her family "what they learned in school" will feel when he/she brings home a picture or series of pictures that clearly illustrates their accomplishments. The use of digital work samples will directly enhance self-esteem, instill pride, and motivate future learning by providing my students with concrete evidence of their accomplishments. Portfolios will better illustrate for parents and future teachers the "process" by which my students learn, his/her preferred mode of learning, the accommodations and modifications needed, and the concepts and tasks mastered. An indirect benefit of this project will be more effective educational support at home and in future classrooms which will ultimately translate into increased mastery of educational goals.
In order to print our pictures, we need ink cartridges and photo paper. Please consider a donation towards these items so everyone is able to "see" what my young students can "do"!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
