This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”
― John Dewey
The group of scholars in my classroom is a dynamic bunch. Together, the second graders in my class are articulate, respectful, motivated, outstanding, and responsible. They love to work on challenging tasks that encourage productive discourse. They enjoy participating in hands-on activities. Needless to say, because all children learn differently, the learning needs of my students vary greatly.
The community of learners I, alongside my co-teacher, teach, come from diverse households, many of which face challenges such as social, emotional, academic, and financial hardships in their daily lives. With that said, when they come to school each day, learning and fun are placed at the forefront of their day with hopes to guide them to reach their fullest potential regardless of the demands of the world around them. While the teachers and support staff strive to provide resources, it truly takes a village. Please help me support these bright scholars shine as they should at the Jewel of Long Island City.
My Project
Mirrors will support scholars to see their growth and progress! Currently my 2nd graders are struggling with reading multisyllabic words, fluency and more.
It is my hope that with the mirrors students will develop in their reading abilities as they notice how they pronounce words and letters.
Some lesson ideas that I have developed include multi sensory lessons, partner lessons where scholars will watch as they pronounce words, as well as independent lessons where scholars can recognize chunks and parts of words. With all that said, the mirrors will be a tool that I can provide so that they can assess themselves, see their errors and more importantly see their progress!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
