My students attend a public school in Queens, New York. Many are new immigrants. They come from many different countries including China, Korea, Greece, Pakistan, India, Egypt and Columbia. The class is a true melting pot and we love to share about our different cultures.
My students do not have access to books, supplies and manipulatives needed to learn, due to both monetary issues and the impact of Covid-19 on their families.
Many live in small apartments with siblings, parents, grandparents and other relatives. They are trying to do the best they can with what they have. They want to participate and learn, but due to coronavirus, students in class cannot share materials and children that are remote do not have access to materials at home.
I wish that you could experience my students' thirst for learning firsthand. They are so excited as they progress in all areas, but are especially proud and excited as they learn to become strong readers.
My Project
As part of the first grade curriculum, my students are taught to read nonfiction informational books. The students love learning this unit, but often complain that they cannot see the details in the pictures. When hearing mentor texts and read alouds, often the books are too small to be seen by an entire class.
The document camera will allow the class to see both words and pictures up close, so that they have the opportunity to observe more and learn more information as they practice reading strategies.
The excitement to learn new skills and strategies will increase as they are able to view the words and photographs in the nonfiction texts. I can't wait to see their faces light up as they examine images and words closely because of the large images projected by the document camera. It will also lead to exciting conversations!
