My Students

As a speech-language pathologist in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face they come to school almost every day willing to learn.

I serve students in self contained classrooms where students have a range of disabilities including but not limited to: health impairments, intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, specific learning disabilities, severe communication disorders.

The typical student I work with reads at a pre-k level (even students in 2nd and 3rd grades) and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. 99.8% of our students are African American. The opportunities my students have (or don't have) and the achievement gaps are very apparent among the student population in our school. I have a $200 budget to buy all my supplies during the year including paper, printer supplies, pens, and classroom activity materials. Our classrooms are dilapidated and books are outdated. Special education teachers, such as myself, are expected to deliver excellent instruction in all academic and communication areas without the requisite tools to teach our students.

My Project

Students will use these story telling activities to practice language. Many have severe language deficits and have difficulty even with answering basic questions. Using familiar stories (once they are taught the stories...my students don't come to school knowing basic fairy tales), students are able to practice using correct language such as using correct grammar and sentence lengths.

My students, using these materials, will be able to practice answering comprehension questions after seeing the story and hearing the story.

They will be able to retell a story easier using engaging and tangible materials. Most of my students aren't even able to tell their caregivers at home how their day was or what they did during the day. Being able to practice retelling stories and events, using these materials, students will begin to develop the language skills necessary to be able to successfully communicate with the world around them. They will use the story telling glove and story items to retell stories and answer comprehension questions after listening to the story. The students will use the sorting items to learn that objects are different and will learn to attend to the color of items and sort them into the right bucket. I will have the students label the items as they put them into the correct bucket. I move from room to room serving my students and need something to carry all of the therapy materials from room to room and the tote will help me stay organized and be able to quickly and efficiently move from room to room.
