I love teaching science, and I love all my multicultural students and all the diversity and experiences they bring to my classroom, BUT teenagers and their phones---! The media has told them that they can't live with phones. I want to create a safe, nurturing environment, free of social media and texting distractions, that is conducive to learning.
Having a secure place in my class to store cell phones will allow my students to focus on the science lesson each day without being distracted by what is on their phones.
My personal experience of cell phones in the classroom is seeing multiple students failing because they are consumed with their cell phones.
Cell phones cause some of the most addictive behaviors that I know would surprise you. Students hide them, they seek them out, and they don’t leave them alone and struggle to put them down. I've seen students receive hundreds of notifications in a single class period.
If students can focus on the lesson and not be distracted by a text or alert, their class participation would improve tenfold, and their success in the classroom would also greatly improve. Having this cabinet in the room will give the students peace of mind about their devices being safe and will help to facilitate a better environment for all.
