Students being able to share how their brain works with their whole class! I am a special education teacher working with 4th and 5th grade students. My school is in a high poverty area where not all students come to school with the background need for a solid foundation of learning or the motivation to be high achievers.
My students struggle year after year in math. They have poor conceptual understanding of math concepts and therefore struggle with the demands grade level math requires. I have been studying and implementing cognitively guided instruction in math with high success. Students are actively engaged in their own understanding of math and having better retention then ever. A very important piece of this guided instruction is daily math discussions and students sharing their work on real life math problems.
As a special education teacher working in a small group, students are easily able to show their work-I've seen it work well! With the push for sped students to be inclusive, I must bring this type of instruction into 4 gen ed classrooms. It's impossible for a student to hold their math notebook in front of a group of 28 and communicate their work. A Document Camera allows for a student to project their work on a screen for all to see, discuss, and reflect.
Your help will not only benefit my special education students, but the 4 classrooms I work with. Students will be empowered to share their work with others. All participants will be highly motivated to continue deepening their math understanding; sharing, modeling, and learning with their peers.
