This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever seen the joy on a child's face when they watch a really engaging live performance? I have seen those facial expressions on my students, and it's an experience I want to recreate by showing them video footage of live musicians.
My students are almost 100% African, African-American, or Hispanic.
We are at a public charter school in New York, and we are embedded in a vibrant, music-making community. However, although we are very lucky to have a principal who strongly supports the arts, we can't always afford to bring our students to the many musical opportunities. The next best thing to live performances is video. With a new projector, I would be able to show my students video footage of concerts, close-ups of people demonstrating their instruments, classic scenes of musicians from film, or anything we could possibly imagine. Through the magic of the Internet, I have infinite material available at my fingertips to enrich my students' music education. I just need a projector so they can see it.
My Project
Many students these days require visual stimuli to help them learn. We can look at pictures to learn about the instruments, but can you really appreciate just how big a tuba is without seeing a person holding it and playing it? With our new projector, students will watch videos to help them understand many concepts in my class: how a bow is used on a string instrument, an authentic drum circle in Africa, what a marching does on a football field. Please, help my students get a projector and a cart so they can see video examples of living musicians performing the music we learn in class.
We do so many performance-based activities in my class, a curriculum which sets the stage for a lifelong love of music.
By seeing video footage of what other musicians do, my students will connect their real-life experiences with cultures around the world. Your donation to help us get a projector will light up the faces of a school full of children: they can't wait to see the world make music!
