My classroom is composed of 32 hardworking children that come from impoverished homes. Many of them are the first of their families to be English language learners. My students come to school every day excited to learn. We set goals in each of the content areas which my students aim to achieve. This is not easy in a low income, Title I school, where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Despite the many challenges my students face, they are always ready and excited to learn.
They are most excited to have technology-based instruction or research-based projects.
Their faces light up when it's their turn to do research on the computer, or type their reports. They love to play math games to improve/reinforce their multiplication and division skills. During literacy, my English Language Learners are able to use the computers as a listening center for first reader books and learn the language. Their faces are filled with such concentration, it's a sight to see. They love to do research in both social studies and science as well. They are so fascinated by what they about food chains, ecosystems, slavery, the American Revolution, etc. Computers are great!
My Project
This year our school has eliminated the technology class due to funding. My students will no longer have access to technology in the classroom they had once a week. The 3 desktop computers in our classroom are broken and are being removed without replacement due to low funding. We are in desperate need of technology so that my students are not at a disadvantage without technology-based education. Please help us keep a technology-driven classroom even though the NYCDOE has not supplied with the tools to do so. We want to be able to research, use computer programs to code, word process, make presentations and play educational games.
