My Students
Do you remember what it was like to huddle around your classmates and listen to your teacher during lessons? We would sit on the carpet side by side and ask questions, helping us to build a sense of community and enrich our classroom environment. My students need a carpet to experience this.
My students are full of excitement about Second Grade and being in school!
They are sweet and ready to learn new things every day. Our school is fairly new, it opened five years ago and is lacking many instructional materials, including group sitting areas, and group carpets. Our school has a moderate poverty level, about 40% of our students receive a free or reduced lunch. My goal is to fill our classroom with as many literacy opportunities as possible to help our young students meet the goals of becoming 21st century learners and global competitors. Having a carpet for a community meeting place will help enrich the literacy opportunities in our classroom.
My Project
Currently, my students have individual desks that they work and learn at. During lessons, there is no where to come together as a class and have a small discussion, since the floors are hard and bare. Having a carpet in the classroom will allow for students to leave their desks and collaborate with their peers on a more personal level. Students will be closer to the White Board and help students remain engaged in the lessons.
The donation of these items will make a difference in our classroom by helping students become more engaged in group discussions and to build a strong sense of community!
This is an important aspect in Second Grade because it helps to foster a love for collaboration in students, which is something they can take with them through their education
