Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I don't have an adequate brush, nor enough colors, to paint a picture of the chairs in my Compton Language Arts classroom. But, if one were to close their eyes and picture a faded multicolor landscape of worn out school chairs they would benefit from these details: Some of the chairs rock because the legs are broken, or bent, many chairs pinch because of loose fasteners on their seat, a few chairs are sticky because too much graffiti remover was used by yours truly to take off years of obscenities left before they came into my possession, and not one chair fails to mark up the floor due to the lack of skids on their legs.
My 8th grade students have spent years in a school system that preaches improving academic achievement, yet refuses to see that a proper place to sit might just make learning possible. I suppose that's due to the expense of typical student chairs.
Little did I realize that school chairs are priced something like space shuttle parts and we need 48 of them! So, I have searched, and searched, the catalogs on Donors Choose and am proud to say I have found the absolute least expensive way to provide a safe, comfortable, chair for my students.
Please lean back at your current seat, and consider our lack there of. Think of it as seats for success, or cheap chairs for Compton, or any other alliteration that might make you take a seat in our classes' hearts.
Many thanks.
