My Students

The students in my class have a love of learning, fun, and technology. They are always seeking ways to their work more efficiently, but always with enjoyment. Most are always willing to help others as they try to master their own understanding.

"Never mistake a single mistake with a final mistake." Mistakes are something they all make.

And as we go about our day, we are always saying that if you make a mistake...fix it! That is where their learning happens.

My Project

It's hard to picture a classroom that isn't dominated with students sitting at desks either in groups or rows. This last year I was struck by an observation; when I would call the students to gather around for instruction and send them back out to work. The days that I gave them more leniency on how and where they sat they were more responsive, retained direction better and stayed on task more consistently. This got me searching to see if anyone else had noticed this behavior. That led me to discover the idea of flexible seating. There are a whole number of options and items that fall under the label of Flexible seating. From wobble stools that let the kids shift their weight around, to fidget bands that give them something to burn off their wiggles, all the way to lap desks they can move anywhere in the classroom.

Flexible seating will let my students choose the most conducive arrangement for their learning.

Giving them this choice comes with many benefits. They will feel empowered by the chance to make a choice for themselves. They can use seating that gives them an outlet for physical energy without being a distraction to the class. Each student is different so it's not a surprise that not every one of them finds our identical desks comfortable. It makes sense that when my kids aren't constantly distracted by how uncomfortable they are, they will be more engaged with what they are learning.

I'm excited by the prospect of providing options to all my future students.
