Seating That Makes Cents: Learning Financial Literacy Through Flexible Seating

My Students

My first grade​ class is a place of challenge, discovery, and growth filled with many different opportunities for all students. They are creating a foundation for their future through learning and education. My students face the challenges of living in a high poverty area, yet they come to school eager to learn every day.

The students grow and learn in different ways with different supports.

They bring to the class their wonderfully diverse backgrounds as many are new immigrants to our country and have an eagerness to learn English. All of my 1st grade students have unique needs and talents that help them grow as lifelong learners.

My Project

It's not a secret that students are able to better focus when they are able to move and are empowered when given choice over their learning. The majority of the time most students are seated in standard chairs. I want to provide my students with more opportunities to move as well as have voice and choice over their learning. In addition, I want to provide them with meaningful experiences to apply financial literacy concepts.

"Seat Cents" will not only provide students with a meaningful learning opportunity to practice various financial literacy concepts, but it will also provide my students with the flexible furniture they so desperately need.

I know students will be so excited to have more seating options in the Math Area of the Classroom. This project will provide my students with adjustable floor seats and wobble chairs where they can sit in while they learn about financial literacy during Math Centers. Students will earn "Seat Cents" for demonstrating positive behaviors such as being respectful, responsible, safe, and kind. Students can also earn "Seat Cents" for working hard, and finishing work teaching them that we have to work hard for our money!

Students will be able to spend their "Seat Cents" on different furniture options. Not only will they practice counting money to purchase an opportunity to sit in one of our new seating options, they will also practice saving vs. spending as they decide whether to spend their "Seat Cents" to sit in a more affordable seating option or save up to sit in a more expensive option. Thank you for your support as you provide my students with sensory seating to help them get their wiggles out, increase focus, and apply financial literacy concepts through an authentic learning experience.
