My Students

My students come from a small town of about 18,000. In recent years several of the factories and places of employment in our town have been lost. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.

My students are kind-hearted, creative, smart, and very spontaneous.

They need to move; they love to read and crave lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. As a result of all these factors, they don't all come to me with the life experiences we think of as typical. Many times they have no control over what happens in their lives at home. I want to offer them some control over their experience during the school day.

My Project

I want to introduce flexible seating in my classroom so that my students have some choice in their day. So much of my students' lives are out of their control and dictated by others, I want to give them back some ownership. Flexible seating will allow my students to choose where they want to sit and how they want to sit on a daily basis.

By having flexible seating in the classroom, students are free to make a choice of which seating arrangement is best for their learning.

By giving them a choice, I am helping them learn how to make appropriate choices to make them more successful in the classroom. Flexible seating will also help reduce the amount of behavior problems that happen in the classroom. By having flexible seating, students have their own space to spread out and have room to work. Having flexible seating also helps with engagement. By having higher engagement, students will be more successful and make higher gains through the year.
