I am a special education teacher in a middle school setting which services children in grades 6-8. Children with special disabilities have always been my heartbeat in the education arena. Being a special education teacher is not only challenging but very rewarding. The needs of these children are as varied as the disabilities themselves.

My school is designing a new program for children with disabilities on the Autism spectrum, specifically Asperger's Syndrome. These children have average to above average IQs and are extremely intelligent. However, they often have difficulty navigating social situations and have sensory issues. We are developing strategies that will allow for their success in the general education classroom. Our hope is to accomplish this by using creative accommodations that promote positive reinforcements for these children. It is my goal with this new program to ensure that each of these students is given the opportunity to achieve their potential. These children are exceptional, and they deserve the chance to be successful in their educational endeavors.

For most of us seating is not an issue. Desks and chairs have always been the classroom standard. However, many of these children have sensory issues that require special seating. By providing a variety of seating options for sensory input, we will see an increase in on-task behaviors, a decrease in behavior problems, and preferential seating for scheduled breaks during times of sensory overload.

With such a wide variety of needs in the area of seating, I am setting up my classroom to accommodate as many as possible. I am hoping to provide many options using a variety of chairs such as: rocking chairs, canvas lawn chairs, rolling ball chairs, stationary ball chairs, hammock chairs, and of course, the traditional desk and chair. Your help in accommodating the sensory needs of individual students will be a major factor in the success of my classroom management.
