My Students

My students come from diverse backgrounds. Many of them love coming to school because it is their safe place. Some of my students live with multiple families, share rooms, or do not have a bedroom, so they sleep on a couch or the floor. They do not have a quiet place to read.

They come to supportive reading excited and yearning to learn.

They want to do their best and want to succeed. The joy they express when they “get it” makes the hard parts of my job all worth it. When a student told me, “I like coming here because I can read the stories,” I knew I had to make reading more natural and comfortable.

My Project

As a remedial reading teacher, my room is very small. Students come to class with a book bag, book, and keyring of high-frequency words. They have folders and writing and wordbooks that remain in the class.

We work at one table and it is overcrowded with materials.

These seat sacks will help my students have room to work effectively and efficiently. Students currently place their materials on the floor or work on top of them.

With so much material and so little space, it hinders the learning process. These storage bags will help create a comfortable working environment.

This storage space will help with Social Distancing too since materials will not be overflowing into each other’s space
