My Students
My students are strivers: cognitively sharp, intellectually curious, and extremely hard working.
Our school is the most ethnically diverse of all New York City's specialized public high schools, and 67% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch.
We are an International Baccalaureate school: all of our juniors and seniors are enrolled in this rigorous, college-level program. We consistently rank among the top ten public high schools in New York State (#3 in 2016)! Still, we struggle with the limitations of a public school budget.
My Project
Hands-on lab work is many students' favorite part of studying science. Our school has rigorous lab requirements: As IB diploma candidates, my students are asked to complete two original, long-term investigations in biology. In their junior year, they do this small groups, and by senior year, they're expected to individually and independently design, carry out, and analyze an original experiment. This senior project is the capstone of their high school science experience.
Digital scales are essential to so many experiments, and our school is down to only one functional lab-quality scale.
We really need more scales, especially in classes of 32 students! I am grateful for a donation of four scales, and am trying to work up to a class set of eight scales.
