Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My kids are growing up in one of the toughest neighborhoods in California and in spite of the economic disadvantages their families face and the statistics that would indicate otherwise- these kids are eager, adorable, enthusiastic, all readers in the making. That said, learning to read is tough for any 5 year old and for the 15 native Spanish speakers in my class there is an additional hurdle- language! Research shows that literacy skills are entirely transferable between languages and opportunities to experiment with reading in Spanish is exactly with what the most struggling of my emergent readers need. With your help, I can get 5 sets of 20 stage 1 leveled reading books in Spanish to use with my lowest readers. This will help them learn to look at initial consonants and solidify their 1:1 tracking without the added challenge of English. Once the children sure up these critical skills I will help them make the transfer to their English reading skills.
